SUMMARY:Facilitator Development Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Melanie Chernoff \n \n \n \n Program Director\, JPSD \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n October 19\, 2026 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Community Engagement Project \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Twitter \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n LinkedIn \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The Community Engagement Project in LAWS-2027: Youth Justice in Canada started 5 years ago as a way for students to make connections in the community. The project has become a fixture in this youth justice class and has helped students see theory in action. The demo would include pictures of students at their community agency visits along with some student testimonials. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n WHAT WERE THE MAIN GOALS OF THIS PROJECT? \n \n \n \n To engage students in local youth agencies for the purpose of reflecting on course material. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION? \n \n \n \n Students participated in community engaged learning through one class project. The community was brought into the classroom and the classroom learned through the community. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n WHAT WERE THE PROBLEMS OR CHALLENGES YOU FACED WORKING ON THIS PROJECT? \n \n \n \n Preparing students for the community experience. Having enough community partners to place students at for their visits.   Creating a written assignment that allowed students to reflect on what they learned in the community while connecting the experience to course material. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n LESSONS LEARNED \n \n \n \n Getting students out into into the community connects them to future employers.Community agencies love JIBC students. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About Melanie Chernoff \n \n \n \n Having been trained at JIBC as a Youth Probation Officer\, Melanie knows the value of the education provided by JIBC and is committed to paying this forward. Melanie has served half of her career in the field as a Youth Probation Officer and the other half at JIBC training youth justice staff\, BC Corrections staff\, and teaching in the Law Enforcement Studies programs. As Program Director of Academic Programs at JIBC\, being in the classroom is important to Melanie to provide opportunities for students to connect their learning to community experiences. This is where the Community Engagement Project was developed. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n PrevPreviousMoving from Gatekeeping to Growth: Understanding Student Learning\, Providing Feedback\, and Fostering Self-Assessment using PebblePad \n \n \n \n \n NextPebble Pad for Reflective LearningNext
