She was first trained as a mediator in high school and subsequently trained peer mediators\, volunteered for a community mediation centre and was a small claims court mediator. Experience in classroom teaching and a commitment to emotional intelligence led her to complete an M.A. in Social and Emotional Learning. She lived in Israel from 2000-2021 and worked as an employee of and a consultant for tens of social change and human rights organizations. Simultaneously\, she was actively engaged in Arab/Jewish and Israeli/Palestinian dialogue on the personal level and worked as a group process facilitator\, a Jewish advisor of an interfaith program and\, briefly\, as coordinator for an Israeli-Palestinian mediation program. In 2021\, Richlen completed a PhD at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel where her research focused on refugee-led organizations. Since moving to Vancouver in 2021\, she has taught courses on human rights\, ethnicity and ethnic relations\, non-violent social change\, race and ethnicity and social inequality in Canada at the University of British Columbia\, Simon Fraser University and Langara College. She currently is a member of a refugee sponsorship committee and involved in welcoming newcomers to Canada more generally. \n \n \nDr. Firoz Verjee\nFaculty\, School of Public Safety\n \nDr. Firoz Verjee is a systems engineer with over 30 years of expertise in geospatial technologies and emergency management. He has held senior technical positions at George Washington University\, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\, Geneva Centre for Humanitarian Demining\, and the Aga Khan Development Network. He now serves as a full-time instructor in the Justice Institute of British Columbia’s School of Public Safety.\n \nIn Fall 2024\, Firoz introduced Artificial Intelligence as a key theme in his course ESMS 3330: Technologies in Emergency Management\, adding modules on the history\, ethics\, and practical applications of AI. \n  \n  \nDr. Sunny Mangat\nLead Faculty\, Law Enforcement Studies Program\n \nDr. Sunny Mangat is a sociologist with a PhD from the University of Roehampton. As lead faculty in the Law Enforcement Studies Program and a researcher\, she brings her curiosity and critical lens into the classroom—always asking how tools like ChatGPT can both support student learning and challenge us to think about ethics\, creativity\, and the future of higher education.\n \nHer curiosity drives her to explore big questions: why students (and people in general) are drawn to using AI\, how it is reshaping the classroom and research\, and what its long-term implications might be for society. True to form\, Sunny doesn’t just teach about AI—she experiments with it in real time. Case in point: she asked ChatGPT to help re-write this very bio\, making her both the researcher and the research subject. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMelanie Meyers and Dave Smulders– Co-Moderators\n \nMelanie and Dave bring extensive experience and a shared passion for education to their work at the Justice Institute of British Columbia’s Centre for Teaching\, Learning\, and Innovation (CTLI)\, where they support excellence in teaching and learning.\n \nMelanie has a background in Instructional Design and since joining JIBC in 2008\, she has led award-winning projects in open educational resources\, emerging technologies\, and blended learning. SUMMARY:Supporting PebblePad Adoption in Professional Programs
DESCRIPTION:PebblePad Workshop Summer Series 2025 \n  \nWorkshop #2: Lessons from the Field: Supporting PebblePad Adoption in Professional Programs\nThursday\, August 21\, 2025\n11:00 am – 12:00 pm | online\nFacilitator: Susan Bonham\, Langara College \n \nWhat does it take to successfully implement a new learning platform in a professional education setting? This session shares Langara College’s experience navigating common adoption challenges with PebblePad—challenges that will feel familiar to faculty and program leaders working in applied and professional programs. We’ll cover practical issues like instructor onboarding\, designing meaningful learning tasks\, and integrating assessment tools\, as well as what we’ve learned from student feedback. Come learn what worked (and what didn’t) to support a smooth and effective rollout.\n \n \nRegister now!\n \nContact Dave Smulders for more information.\n  \n\n \nAbout Our Facilitator: Susan Bonham\nI have an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from UBC’s Faculty of Education\, as well as a one-year diploma in teaching ESL from VCC. I spent six years teaching government-funded courses to immigrants and refugees before moving to Langara. At Langara\, I taught English for Academic Purposes for seven years before moving to Langara’s Educational Technology Department as an EdTech Advisor (non-instructional faculty position). All of my teaching was with adult learners\, and many of them were highly educated with many years of professional experience in their background.\n \nSince moving to Langara’s EdTech Department in 2020\, a great deal of my focus has been on ePortfolios and PebblePad. I led the PebblePad pilot that ran from 2021-2023 and have continued to be heavily involved in growing ePortfolio practice at the College since we moved past our pilot phase. Supporting and growing PebblePad use has been an incredible opportunity for me to learn about folio thinking\, experiential learning\, and authentic assessment. My experience ranges from the pedagogy (or androgogy if you prefer) of portfolio practice to an in-depth knowledge of the PebblePad platform (including the assessment side\, ATLAS). I have given workshops on the entire spectrum\, mostly to faculty but increasingly for students as well.

SUMMARY:Trauma-Informed Teaching Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator: Dr. Alana Abramson\, Department of Criminology\, Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU)\n \nTrauma-informed teaching focuses on integrating knowledge about how people are affected by trauma into your teaching and facilitation practices. It does not require you to be an expert in trauma or trauma treatment\, but rather\, it is a way of working that emphasizes safety\, trustworthiness\, choice\, connection\, collaboration\, strengths\, skill building\, and self-care. It involves understanding how trauma can affect students’ behaviour\, learning\, and overall well-being\, and adjusting teaching practices accordingly. This approach emphasizes creating a safe and inclusive space\, being sensitive to students’ experiences\, and providing appropriate support to help them succeed academically and emotionally. \n  \nThis workshop will be held in a virtual space. Expect to be fully engaged with plenty of opportunity to discuss and share ideas and experiences. The focus will be on practical ideas that you can take into your classes and use in your teaching. \n  \nRegistration is limited to 20 participants. Please let your instructors know and invite them to register. There is no cost for JIBC staff/faculty.\n \n \nClick here to complete your registration. \nPriority for registration is for practising JIBC instructors. If you are not currently in a teaching role\, but you are interested in the workshop\, you may still be able to join if there are enough spaces. If demand exceeds our capacity to deliver\, we may also consider offering a second delivery at a later date. \n  \n\nDr. Alana Abramson is a passionate educator\, dedicated to enhancing student experiences in the classroom. She believes education can inspire personal and social transformation and enjoys learning with her students. Alana Abramson has been involved in the field of restorative justice (RJ) as an researcher\, practitioner\, and trainer since 1999. She has extensive experience implementing trauma informed\, culturally responsive RJ in community\, prison\, and school contexts. Alana’s doctoral research related to transformative learning within post-secondary education and she has been involved in delivering trauma informed practice training with the JIBC since 2019. In 2017\, Dr. Abramson was the recipient of the Restorative Justice Award from the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. Alana is currently a full-time Criminology Instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University\, Facilitator for the Alternatives to Violence Project and the BC Bereavement Society and the co-chair of the Restorative Justice Association of BC. SUMMARY:TLC: Course Development with Articulate Rise
DESCRIPTION:Our department (CTLI) has been using Articulate Rise as an authoring tool for content that we can display inside Blackboard or on the web. Rise offers a set of features that make it relatively easy to produce content with some visual appeal. At the same time\, it has some limitations or cautions that people should be aware of. In this Teaching and Learning Collaborative session\, we want to take a look at some of the work we’ve done in Rise and talk about its value for curriculum developers. We also invite anyone else from the JI who has been using Rise to share examples and offer their observations. Come join us for this TLC conversation!
