Developing Sustainable OER at JIBC
Post by BCcampus’ editorial team | bccampus.ca
The Justice Institute of British Columbia is leveraging a BCcampus Open Education Sustainability Grant to develop viable and supportable solutions that increase the use of open educational resources (OER) in their programs, despite a global pandemic.
In fall 2019 we announced that the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) was the recipient of a BCcampus Open Education Sustainability Grant, a program designed to help post-secondary institutions advance their on-campus efforts to create and deliver sustainable open education practices.
At the time, the JIBC team was focused on a range of open education projects that spanned the next two years, including hosting events, creating and hosting workshops, and creating and hosting a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) professional development series. Read More
Going All in on OER
From Faculty Focus, Higher Ed Teaching and Learning | facultyfocus.com
Last spring, I joined a campus mentoring cohort that paid a generous stipend to consider the possibility of integrating open educational resources (OER) into all of our first-year composition (FYC) courses at Texas Woman’s University (TWU). At first, my interest in the available OER was sincere but, to be honest, non-committal. I was not about to release a perfectly good textbook that accommodated our program curriculum to take this next uncertain step into the world of OER-based teaching resources. Read More
Giving Meaningful Feedback
Post by Helena Prins, advisor, Learning + Teaching, at BCcampus | bccampus.ca
Giving meaningful feedback was the topic of a recent FLO Friday session, facilitated by Monica Morris. Monica’s experience in teaching and learning spans from course design to program implementation to instructor development and everything in between! She is currently an instructor at Camosun College who understands the pressure of the online pivot as well as the added challenge of providing meaningful feedback in the virtual environment. Based on the high registration and attendance for this session, we knew this topic was not only of interest but of importance too. Read More

BCcampus Upcoming Events
LaTeX Learning Community
LaTeX (LAY-tech) is a math markup language that helps to make STEM resources more accessible and professional-looking. LaTeX is integrated into Pressbooks, a platform that many open textbooks are written in. LaTeX can also be used to create freestanding documents; although some people may know how to do a lot with the language, their knowledge doesn’t always transfer to Pressbooks, which employs a more limited version of LaTeX. Whether you’re a LaTeX whiz who needs help transitioning to Pressbooks, a newbie who’s still learning the basics, or somewhere in between, we invite you to attend monthly sessions with the LaTeX learning community. Together, we will meet to discuss LaTeX problems and solutions. Bring your questions and quandaries!
