BCcampus Safer Campuses for Everyone

Our team was contracted by BCcampus and the Ministry of Advanced Skills and Training to design and develop an Open Educational Resource course called Safer Campuses for Everyone training. The training is part of a growing collection of open education resources for addressing sexual violence in post-secondary institutions in B.C. These resources are intended to be of use by staff, students, and faculty working in a range of contexts and adapted to each institution’s learning management system.

BCcampus Open Education Sustainability Grant (Universal Design for Learning Series & Workbook)

As part of the 2019 BCcampus Open Education Sustainability Grant that the JIBC was awarded, our team, along with Dr. Seanna Takacs, designed and developed a collection of three Universal Design for Learning (UDL) workbooks: Universal Design for Learning: A Practical Guide, Universal Design for Learning: Strategies for Blended and Online Learning, and Assessment Design: Perspectives and Examples Informed by Universal Design for Learning. Along with the workbooks, we developed and delivered UDL workshops to faculty and staff for the JIBC and the Teaching & Learning PSI community through BCcampus.

Parenting After Separation & Indigenous Parenting After Separation

Developed for the Ministry of Family Justice and in collaboration with the Corrections and Court Services Division, Parenting After Separation was a free course aimed to provide information to parents, guardians and other family members who are dealing with family issues because of a separation or divorce. Multiple versions of the same training were produced to fulfill the diverse needs of different families in BC. This award-winning training featured an English-based generic version that was open for all. A separate customized version was developed to support Indigenous families. Currently, a Punjabi version is in design & development stage.

Fire Investigation Simulation

Our team along with the Fire & Safety Division, subject matter experts from the District of North Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services, and students from the graduate-level program at the Centre for Digital Media developed a gamified 3D environment for fire investigation trainees to identify the origin and the cause of the fire. With a first-person perspective, learners would hear a situational briefing from a virtual fire captain in the simulation, walk around the house, examine the burn site, photograph the objects, take notes, follow the protocols and eventually reach a conclusion.

To meet the increasing demand for flexible learning for aspiring Law Enforcement professionals, the team converted 18 courses from traditional face-to-face to online formats offering multiple streams of delivery with easy access. Our team designed and developed custom HTML templates that are responsive inside Blackboard, the institute’s LMS. All elements were created to comply with the current web accessibility guidelines. This series of courses offered maximum flexibility, usability and accessibility for all JIBC faculty and students.
