WHY WAS THIS PROJECT NEEDED?
We were awarded a JIBC SSHRC Institutional Grant – Explore. Our research topic is Breaking Down Barriers: Exploring Challenges in the Creation of Accessible Documents. This research project focuses on the accessibility of educational materials from the perspective of instructors, with the aim of identifying, understanding, and addressing the challenges they encounter in crafting accessible teaching documents.
HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION?
This research will be pivotal in identifying and removing barriers which is essential for JIBC’s commitment to being respectful, progressive, and being a leader in providing accessible and inclusive education for both students and staff.
PROBLEMS OR CHALLENGES FACED?
Limited understanding of research methodology. However we learnt as we conducted research. We also had difficulty finding people to conduct literary analysis which is still being worked on.
LESSONS LEARNED
We ran our files in blackboard Ally to check their accessibility scores, however even though the document would be scored high, it is a possibility that they are not fully accessible. How we built our word documents will decide how the accessible the pdf output is. Also learnt to work on a new Data visualization and storytelling tool called Flourish.
