Twitter
LinkedIn

Explaining how students and instructors alike can use Generative AI in useful ways to further their education without breaking Academic Integrity.

  • Prompt Engineering (how to ask good questions to get good answers)
  • How to use AI to brainstorm ideas
  • Enhancing your writing – proofreading, spelling, grammar, readability
  • AI as a personal assistant – asking “dumb questions” and getting helpful answers.
  • Examples of breaking academic integrity using AI.

This presentation explores the role of generative AI in education. It defines generative AI and its capabilities, such as creating text, images, and more. The presentation balances student usage of AI for studying against academic integrity concerns, recognizing both AI’s limitations and potential. The presentation encourages setting clear AI usage expectations and promoting academic integrity to prevent plagiarism and cheating

WHY WAS THIS PROJECT NEEDED?

Currently there is no clear guidance or policy around the use of Generative AI. By highlighting ways it can be used that do not violate our academic policies, we may help shape how our staff and students use AI.

HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION?

It provides examples of how to use AI for those who have never used it. This is relevant for our staff, students and increasingly anyone who’s online and using technology.
Framing it in a positive light of how it can be used helps those unfamiliar with it become familiar with it and brainstorm their own ideas of how it can be used to enhance their learning.

PROBLEMS OR CHALLENGES FACED?

‘I haven’t created this yet, but anticipate that I could create this presentation (likely Mentimeter with live demos of Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT) in a couple hours.

I think this presentation would be best done as a live presentation on Teams, recorded, which could then be shared afterwards.

LESSONS LEARNED

‘This topic, how to use Generative AI is not unique to JIBC, Post Secondary education. This is a technology that is still new and not well utilized. Adult education stands to gain a lot if we embrace AI! Generative Ai provides a route to anyone to engage in meaningful informal learning anywhere, anytime.
