Start Small: A Human-Centred Case for Trying Things

Technology and innovation, including AI, are reshaping the work faculty, staff, and leaders do every day, often faster than anyone can fully keep up with. In public safety and education, finding the time and resources to experiment can already be hard, and new tools raise fresh questions about what to try and how. This talk makes the case for starting anyway, one small step at a time.

Carley makes the case that innovation doesn’t require certainty or a perfect plan. It requires people willing to take the next small step, adapt, and lead toward clarity. She’ll share a human-centred framework for building the confidence and psychological safety teams need to take on uncertain, high-stakes work, especially when resources are tight, and the ground keeps shifting.

Expect a conversation, not a lecture. Come ready to reflect, share, and leave with a clearer sense of what starting small looks like in your own work

About our Keynote Speaker: Carley McDougall

Headshot of Carley McDougall Carley McDougall brings roots in both Canadian postsecondary education and Marketing and Communications to her work in leadership and strategy. Her path wound through sociology, criminal justice, marketing management, and the agency world before bringing her into higher education, and it has shaped how she works: with strategic clarity, passion for change, and genuine care for the people she serves.

Over 8 years at Campus Manitoba, Carley grew from running communications and the Manitoba Open Education Initiative, which saved Manitoban students over $6 million, into guiding the organization as a whole. In June 2026, she led Campus Manitoba through its closure after 35 years, a process with no internal playbook, built in real time. Today, she runs Wavelength Strategic Consulting and Leadership Firm, helping organizations, including postsecondary institutions, thrive through a person- and heart-centred approach to leadership.

Carley is a white-presenting woman of mixed Scottish, British, and Métis heritage, and a citizen of the Manitoba Métis Federation. She holds this heritage with pride while recognizing she has not lived the experiences of Indigenous peoples, and sees herself as a descendant learning to be in right relationship with the land and communities around her.
