BC Corrections has developed a series of videos to serve as evaluation tools for recruitment interviews. These short videos are designed to present realistic scenarios that applicants will watch, followed by a set of questions or a report-writing exercise based on the events observed in the video. The intent is to assess the applicant’s ability to analyze and respond to situations they may encounter in a correctional environment. Additionally, the report-writing component allows for evaluation of the applicant’s written communication skills, including their ability to accurately describe events, organize information logically, and convey key details in a clear and concise manner—critical competencies for corrections officers.
AUTHORING TOOL(S) USED
WHY WAS THIS PROJECT NEEDED?
This tool is necessary to enhance the interview process and ensure a more accurate assessment of applicants’ skills. By presenting real-life scenarios, it allows evaluators to gauge an applicant’s ability to analyze and respond to situations they may encounter in a correctional environment. The report-writing component further evaluates their ability to communicate effectively in writing, ensuring they can accurately describe events, organize information logically, and convey critical details—essential competencies for corrections officers. With the increasing use of AI by applicants to prepare for interviews, this tool helps prevent over-reliance on external aids, ensuring that the applicant’s genuine abilities are being properly assessed.
HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION?
Furthermore, the inclusion of a report-writing component provides a practical assessment of candidates’ ability to communicate clearly and concisely, which is crucial in a correctional setting. This approach goes beyond standard interview questions, offering a more comprehensive evaluation of an applicant’s readiness for the role. In an era where many applicants may rely on AI for interview preparation, this project ensures that core skills such as judgment, situational awareness, and written communication are being authentically measured in a controlled, yet realistic, environment.
