This demo will highlight Community Engaged Learning in the Bachelor of Law Enforcement Program as well as the Post Baccalaureate Program. As students prepare for careers in the field of Law Enforcement, Community Engaged Learning (CEL) enables students to connect with the communities that they hope to one day serveFocusing on community led organizations students can understand what they are in learning in real time and connect course themes to their career goals. CEL promotes students getting out of the traditional classroom setting and building meaningful relationships with community partners.

WHY WAS THIS PROJECT NEEDED?

Community Engaged Learning and Work Integrated Learning is a great tool to connect students with the communities they hope to serve as first responders. It also brings real world experience to what they are learning in the classroom.

HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION?

Community Engaged Learning is a new feature of programming at JIBC.

PROBLEMS OR CHALLENGES FACED?

How do you create new learning opportunities in a co-Hort structured program that has no electives?

LESSONS LEARNED

Throughout the project we have learned about the importance of relationship building with community partners and the importance of reflection.

About Nina Bennett
Nina Bennett is the Work Integrated Learning Program Manager. In her role she focuses on building Work Integrated Learning for students throughout JIBC programs. Nina holds a master's in education and has spent her career thus far in a student facing role developing work integrated learning opportunities and facilitating student development.
