The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Innovation (CTLI) and the Centre for Leadership is offering a flexible workshop ‘Essential Skills for Instructors’ to JIBC faculty and staff looking to improve their practical approaches to teaching and learning. The Essential Skills for Instructors Workshop is a peer-based workshop designed to help participants improve their teaching practice in a safe and fun environment. Participants work closely with one another and facilitators to sharpen their existing teaching skills, add to their repertoires of participatory teaching strategies and techniques, and increase their self-knowledge and confidence as teachers.

Spaces are limited so sign up for the August 2015 offering as soon as possible.

Workshop Description:

The ‘Essential Skills for Instructors Workshop’ is equivalent to the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) and is facilitated by a team of experienced teachers trained as ISW facilitators and certified by the ISW International Advisory Committee. These facilitators lead a combination of large and small group activities to support participants’ learning and growth as teachers. Large group activities include participatory sessions on practical topics like lesson planning and learning objectives. Small group activities, conducted in groups of no more than six participants, focus on the “lesson cycles” at the heart of the ISW model. During the lesson cycle, a participant teaches a short lesson to the other participants in their small group and receives written, oral, and video feedback, as well as opportunity to reflect on their teaching practice. Each participant will complete this cycle three times as an instructor and will participate in many more as a learner supporting other instructors with feedback.

The workshop requires a total of 24 hours of professional development time, and will be offered at the JIBC in a flexible format, utilizing online modules and activities to deliver parts of the workshop, to reduce the amount of classroom time needed and to use this time as effectively as possible.

ISW is internationally recognized for its effectiveness in helping both new and experienced instructors to improve teaching and learning processes. The Essentials Skills Workshop may be credited toward the JIBC new Associate Certificate in Workplace Training and Facilitation for Provincial Instructor Diploma program. You can learn more about the ISW on the ISW International Advisory Committee’s website (http://iswnetwork.ca/)
