01 Apr The Learning Hub: Issue 02
In this week’s issue…
Synchronous vs Asynchronous Learning Online
Synchronous learning is like watching a feature-length movie in a theatre full of people. Asynchronous learning is like watching a Netflix movie on demand: pause, repeat, and rewind anytime on your terms. Which one is more flexible? More accessible? And which one is more valuable for students?

Synchronous
Learning that involves a group of students engaging in learning at the same time.
Example: Video conferences, live lectures, virtual classrooms.
Pros: Immediate and live interaction
Cons: Inflexible schedule, requires reliable, high-speed internet connection; participants could potentially lose interest; lack of individual attention
Tools: BlueJeans, Collaborate, Skype Call

Asynchronous
Student-centered learning using online resources outside the constraints of time and place among people.
Examples: Posting in discussion forums, pre-recorded lecture video/audio, emails.
Pros: Flexible schedule, more time to learn and reflect on material
Cons: Feedback may be delayed, contact with instructor/peers may become limited
Tools: Kaltura, Blackboard discussion forums, announcement, assignments & module content
How do you choose between the two?
Remember:
- Keep it simple!
- Consider the pros and the cons

TIPS & TRICKS
- Remember! Less is more. Don’t try to translate everything you do in class to online. It will end up being a lot of work for you and overwhelming for the learner.
MOVESAFE
Don’t forget to stretch in your home office! It’s important to still keep up with your daily movement routines. We do!
