OFFICE OF INDIGENIZATION
In an era of active cultural revival and conscious dismantling of colonial ideologies, structures, systems and discourses in academia and education, we as Indigenous Peoples, are returning to use epistemologies and methods for teaching and learning that have been practiced for thousands of years. This takes shape in a variety of ways and is categorized under umbrella concepts like decolonization and Indigenization to make sense of this cultural shift. We are in a societal revolution across Turtle Island to disrupt the prevailing superiority and privilege of Euro-Western dogma and replace Eurocentric norms with a shared civilization that is balanced and appropriately reflective of distinction and diversity of its Peoples.
Canada is comprised of Inuit, Métis and 634 First Nations that speak over fifty unique languages. To support your continual commitment to advancing social justice and safety in higher education for Indigenous students, we suggest using Indigenous developed educational tools such as Firstvoices.com, a resource developed by local First Nations to preserve, teach and revitalize languages and culture.
