Lend me your ears: Improving Paramedic Auscultation Skills

Re-integration and update of high-fidelity manikin technology to integrate heart and lung sounds into the patient assessment model. The project included troubleshooting manikin parts and equipment, updating cables for compatibility, implementation of colour-coded compatibiliy system, re-training of faculty, and student orientation to the technology.

WHAT WERE THE MAIN GOALS OF THIS PROJECT?

To improve simulation fidelity and Advanced Care Paramedic auscultation skills during physical assessments.

HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION?

It reconfigured old technology to be functional and integrated into simulation (hugely cost-effective from a program standpoint!)

WHAT WERE THE PROBLEMS OR CHALLENGES YOU FACED WORKING ON THIS PROJECT?

Had to learn exactly how the equipment worked. Had to troubleshoot multiple points of failure. Had to orient instructors to the technology as well as students. Involved a new system of charging and organizing to ensure continuing functionality and compatibility between multiple sets of equipment

LESSONS LEARNED

Organization is key! Also hyping up new things and finding enthusiastic partners.
