Moving from Gatekeeping to Growth: Understanding Student Learning, Providing Feedback, and Fostering Self-Assessment using PebblePad

Expanding on a colleague’s initial PebblePad design and implementation, we are focusing on enhancing students’ thought processes by providing more robust options for feedback and self-assessment..

WHAT WERE THE MAIN GOALS OF THIS PROJECT?

We want to focus on students’ learning processes and move them away from overreliance on AI. We hope to develop independent thinking through feedback, integration of self-marking rubrics and self-assessment. We hope this will improve overall student performance and reduce gatekeeping for instructors.

HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION?

The project attempts to move students away from passively waiting for feedback from the instructor and toward active self-reflection to pinpoint their learning gaps and plan their own unique ways to address them.

WHAT WERE THE PROBLEMS OR CHALLENGES YOU FACED WORKING ON THIS PROJECT?

When working with new technologies, one of the challenges is not only learning how to use it but also figuring out what it is truly capable of.

LESSONS LEARNED

It is a work in progress. Crafting appropriate questions that drive student self-reflection is challenging, especially in an online environment.

TECHNOLOGY USED

PebblePad, Blackboard Ultra
