Testing Pressbooks for Multiple Manuals Mayhem

In Conflict Resolution, we traditionally have designed our manuals in InDesign, and our online content using Rise modules. The goal of this project is to test out using Pressbooks (as hosted by BC Campus) to manage manuals for online and face to face deliveries.

WHAT WERE THE MAIN GOALS OF THIS PROJECT?

The goals were to make updates, distribution and revisions of manuals easier for admin staff, faculty and students. With Pressbooks, we anticipate that it will be easier to make timely updates to manuals, reduce cutting and pasting by using the same manual for Face to Face and Online deliveries, and make it easier to manage manual customization for contract deliveries.

HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION?

Uses an online system to build and distribute traditional learning manuals, instead of managing content in two different systems that were challenging to update.

WHAT WERE THE PROBLEMS OR CHALLENGES YOU FACED WORKING ON THIS PROJECT?

Learning how to organize the material into appropriate “chunks” to support the flow of student learning, but also being able to identify key parts that we want to highlight for student learning

LESSONS LEARNED

I think we are still working on discovering what those lessons are – while new approaches can promise to solve problems, its’ the time spent it student hands that truly measures the implementation.

About Amy Severson
Amy Severson is currently the Program Manager in the Centre for Conflict Resolution (tuition courses), but has also managed Search and Rescue Training, communications and training for an Autism education non-profit, and an educational video library.
She believes that the central part of her job is to support student learning, and that learning doesn't end at 4:30pm on the last day of classes. Experiential learning is a corner-stone of the program and courses in Conflict Resolution, as is curiosity, social justice and transformational change.
