Throughout the first year of the Work integrated Learning (WIL) office we have been able to accomplish a lot and create new opportunities for students. Through directed studies, course-based activities and community engagement, the office has been able to explore what the potential might be for WIL at JIBC.

WHY WAS THIS PROJECT NEEDED?

This project has provides students and the institution an opportunity to build meaningful community connections. It also allows students to explore career opportunities.

HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION?

This project demonstrates innovation by allowing students to learn in a variety of different ways. It moves away from the traditional classroom setting and allows students to learn from their community. WIL has the potential to build students confidence, support them in career aspirations and challenge them to become engaged community members.

PROBLEMS OR CHALLENGES FACED?

Throughout this project the ongoing pandemic proved to be a challenge. Community partners capacity to support students also proved to be a challenge.

LESSONS LEARNED

Throughout this project students’ engagement has demonstrated that there is a real interest amongst students to participate in new innovative models. Also community partners interest and excitement in collaborating demonstrated how much potential there is for more WIL initiatives.
