Workshop: Supporting Students with Disabilities

You are invited to attend a Ministry of Education funded course on Supporting Students with Disabilities. This course was developed in collaboration with the JIBC, Selkirk College and Camosun College.

We are hoping you will also participate in a pre/post survey to assess the effectiveness of the course. There will be a small incentive ($25 gift card to amazon) for completing all three parts of the research project. (pre-course questionnaire, course and post-course questionnaire). Information will be forwarded once you register.

What you will learn from taking this course:

  • Learn practical information and easy-to-use strategies to help you to better support the learning of students with disabilities in your classrooms and learning activities.
  • Create an inclusive class /campus and support all students in their learning and paths to success.

At the end of the course, you will be able to

  • Define what is meant by having a disability and become familiar with a wide range of disabilities and how they impact learning
  • Identify the concepts of duty to accommodate and understand the process of reasonable accommodation
  • Apply strategies and tools from Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to create an inclusive learning environment to accommodate your students
  • Develop personal goals, address institution-wide responsibilities and identify next steps for creating inclusive campuses

One participant completed the JI course ‘Supporting Students with Disabilities’ and thought it was excellent, very helpful, and felt it should be mandatory for all faculty.

Supporting Students with Disabilities Course Evaluation Research Project

The course evaluation research project aims to assess instructor attitudes and adaptability to students with disabilities before and after participating in an online course:  Supporting Students with Disabilities in BC Postsecondary (https://sswdcourse.jibc.ca/ ).

  • Pre-registered participants will receive an email with link and participant number prior to course workshop
  • I-pads will also be provided on course day.
Prior to or day of course on May 16, 2017 – please arrive early to complete survey in class

 

 

Participate in face to face course – Supporting Students with Disabilities. May 16, 2017 –  8:30am to 1 pm
Participate in a post-course survey on attitudes towards students with disabilities.  (5-10 minutes)

  • Participants will also be given post survey link/participant number to complete at later date.
