Supporting Students with Disability Workshop Series – Part 2

PART 2 – How to Accommodate

Workshop for Faculty and Staff

This lesson will outline the legal duty to accommodate students with disabilities and discuss what this means in practical terms for instructors and disability support staff.  The JIBC Academic Accommodation process, including implementation, and an explanation of the different types of accommodations will also be covered.  Participants will acquire skills to identify when students appear to be struggling in the classroom and will role play how to support these learners.

By the end of this lesson you will:

  • Be able to identify the concepts of duty to accommodate, reasonable accommodation, undue hardship and duty to inquire
  • Apply the general process involved for students to access accommodations in the post-secondary environment
  • Recognize that the accommodation process is a partnership between disabilities service staff, faculty, and the student
  • Develop an understanding of specific issues related to confidentiality i.e. what information can be shared with faculty and why some students with disabilities choose not to disclose their disability
  • Learn appropriate methods for inquiring about a student’s well-being.
