In this week’s issue…

It’s a CTLI x OI Collab!

This week we are so happy to announce a new section we’ll be featuring in our Learning Hub. The amazing team who runs our Office of Indigenization will be contributing weekly to our newsletter and we couldn’t be MORE excited!

You can find their very own section, each week, in the right-side of our newsletter.

Welcome OI!

Office of Indigenization

Symbolism as Strategy

Stand for Social Justice and Reflect the Diversity of Indigenous Peoples. This is the spirit of the logo for JIBC’s Office of Indigenization. Created by James Cowpar of the Haida Nation, in consultation with JIBC’s Indigenous Advisory Council, this logo represents guiding principles for Indigenous education and Indigenization at JIBC.

In our pivot to online learning, we must stay steadfast in anchoring to these principles. Virtual spaces are isolating by nature for any student. Consider this against the fact that many Indigenous students are disadvantaged compared to our general student population because of ongoing colonization and discrimination experienced in and out of a colonial higher education space. We have a responsibility to acknowledge this Truth and work to Reconcile this experience by deliberately preventing further marginalization of Indigenous students online by actively upholding the principles of social justice and distinction in diversity. We will be sharing stories and recommendations to do this work in coming issues of The Learning Hub. Safer communities and a more just society begins in our classrooms.

TIPS & TRICKS

Looking to develop the hardware requirements necessary for future online courses? Use Blackboard Help’s Browser Support section as a guide and don’t forget: always use Browser Checker!

20-20-20 RULE

From The Canadian Association of Optometrists. Many of us spend a good deal of our time staring at screens from laptops, computers, smartphones, gaming systems and television. This can put a lot of strain on our eyes and cause eye fatigue. When using your screens give your eyes a break.

Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away.

MOVESAFE

Don’t forget to stretch in your home office! It’s important to still keep up with your daily movement routines. We do!
