In this week’s issue…

A New Pedagogy is Emerging… and Online Learning is a Key Contributing Factor

From Contact North|Nord teachonline.ca

In all the discussion about learning management systems, open educational resources (OER), massive open online courses (MOOCs), social media, options for assessment, learning analytics, new forms of credentials, and augmented and virtual reality, perhaps the most important issues, concern how technology is changing the way we teach and – more importantly – the way students learn. For want of a better term, we call this “pedagogy.” Read More

JIBC Library

Readings in Blackboard

If you have embedded links to Library resources in Blackboard, these will NOT work after May 31st. If your readings are in the Ares Course Reserves in Blackboard, the links WILL work, as they have been updated by Library staff. If you wish to move any embedded links to Ares, contact library@jibc.ca and the Library staff will assist you.

Adding course readings to Ares keeps the JIBC copyright compliant!

This change is due to the new, more secure, login to Library eResources.

OFFICE OF INDIGENIZATION

Colleges & Institutes Canada (CICAN) reports that Indigenous people ages 24-65, are twice the rate of non-Indigenous Canadians to seek access into post-secondary education without a high-school diploma. This statistic is indicative of the unique barriers Indigenous Peoples face in education systems and emphasizes that colleges and institutes, like JIBC, are the main access point to tertiary education for First Nations, Inuit and Métis learners.

As a member of CICAN, JIBC affirms the importance of Indigenous Education and is a signatory of CICAN’s Indigenous Education Protocol, an agreement intended to guide Colleges and Institutes to dismantle systemic and cultural barriers that prevent access to equitable and just education for Indigenous learners and to establish partnerships and take actions to advance Truth and Reconciliation within higher education. To support diverse needs of Indigenous learners and communities, there is no one right way but multiple pathways towards a transformed future.
