National Indigenous History Month

Image Credit: Ha’edlakw (Sean) Whonnock, Kwakwaka’wakw Artist JIBC

In June 2009, the House of Commons reached a unanimous vote to officially declare June as National Indigenous History Month. This decision marked the one year anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission commencing its work to investigate and document the history and impacts of Canada’s Indian residential school system. Learning the history of colonization is important to all Canadians, newcomers and visitors of this country but to understand the effect of racism and colonization of First Peoples, learning cannot be reduced to this area of focus alone.

The purpose of National Indigenous History Month is to provide a critical context so to fully understand Canada’s historical and persisting colonial genocide as one aspect of shared Indigenous history set within the whole scope that respectfully chronicles complex and sophisticated Indigenous societies with distinct cultures, languages, and traditional practices and a unique relationship with the land and histories that begun and spanned thousands of year’s pre contact across Turtle Island.

Having a respectful relationship with Indigenous Peoples depends on knowing and appreciating the local histories of the lands of its First Peoples. As employees of a provincial post-secondary institution, we have a duty to learn about the histories of the lands we each occupy. This week we recommend watching the film cə̓snaʔəm: The City Before the City (2017) directed by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers to learn about settler colonization in the Vancouver area known today as Marpole, which was developed on the the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) village site of cə̓snaʔəm, despite these lands being unceded and Indigenous title based on occupation of the area for more than 5,000 years.

OFFICE OF INDIGENIZATION

xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nation, down-river hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking Peoples, have occupied the region known by the colonial name of Vancouver for more than eight thousand years. Prior to contact, c̓əsnaʔəm (pronounced tsess-nom), located in a Vancouver area now known as Marpole, was one of the largest ancient xʷməθkʷəy̓əm village sites.

The civilization, culture and spirituality of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Peoples is inextricably woven with the area’s ecology, waters and land-base and has been severely disrupted by colonization. While colonial violence takes on many forms, we suggest watching the documentary cə̓snaʔəm, The City Before the City (Tailfeathers, 2017) to learn more about the recent struggle for the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Peoples to regain control and ownership over their traditional, unceded lands. The film investigates a private condo development was planned without free, informed and prior consent and resulted in an unpermitted archeological investigation on the c̓əsnaʔəm village site that disturbingly unearthed ancestral remains.
