OFFICE OF INDIGENIZATION

Knowing what Truth and Reconciliation is not is a foundational competency for educators at all levels. Every Canadian plays a vital role in the Nation to Nation relationship but arguably, certain professions and disciplines carry a higher responsibility to live out actions that engender an equitable, respectful relationship that Indigenous Peoples expect and that British Columbian law requires.

No one person can dismantle systemic inequality and racism alone; however, professionals who are public servants are bound by duty to lead from wherever they live, work and play, to be vigilant and relentless in their pursuit for a fair, just, safe and equitable society for all. Truth and Reconciliation is a conscious choice to unlearn and learn about colonialism, its impacts, and how it operates at micro and macro levels. It is not a leftist trend, a political position, a loss of rights for non-Indigenous people, a checkbox to be ticked, a cloak of guilt and shame to wear nor is it someone else’s responsibility. The better we all know what Truth and Reconciliation means, the better we all can take the necessary steps to creating a new and respectful relationship.
