But having an open, supportive discussion with your children can help them understand, cope and even make a positive contribution for others. Read More

OFFICE OF INDIGENIZATION

Two summers ago, Indspire, a national charitable organization that invests in the education of Indigenous Peoples, conducted a study surveying First Nation, Métis and Inuit post-secondary students to gather their perspective on their educational experience in light of the released Calls to Action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in 2015. Of the 2000 students sent a survey, 290 students responded. Indspire released its survey summary report, thematically analyzing key indicators of successes and gaps reported by students on their institute’s implementation of TRC’s Calls to Action.

Addressing TRC’s Calls to Action is a long-term, vertical and cross-institutional commitment to systemic, policy and cultural change. This work is complex and requires meticulous and methodical integrated planning, partnership and processes. Inspire’s (2018) study’s findings, when extrapolated into one central idea, offers a learner-driven determinant to support Truth and Reconciliation in all areas of the academy: Cultural safety. When cultural safety is embedded as a core characteristic within post-secondary education, Indigenous students report a greater connectedness to their identity and cultures, to their learning environment and community members and the realization of their successes (Success defined not by academics alone but by individual, cultural, and community benefits). Check out this video to learn from Indigenous students attending UBC about issues they face in the classroom and to think about pedagogical practices that respect a diverse student body.
