Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a learning management system. PCP program uses Respondus LockDown Browser for all in-class or proctored written exams.

This video provides a basic understanding of LockDown Browser.

AUTHORING TOOL(S) USED

LockDown Browser is a locked browser for use with tests in Blackboard. Link to download

WHY WAS THIS PROJECT NEEDED?

This tool was needed for securing online exams in classrooms or proctored environments. It supported exam integrity without compromising student experience while writing an online exam.

HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION?

If a Blackboard test requires the LockDown Browser be used, students will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser. It prevents printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment.

PROBLEMS OR CHALLENGES FACED?

Error messages have occurred with some older Mac computers as well if an operating system has not been updated and/or tested. There is, however,  an ability to override Respondus using a unique code for each exam.

LESSONS LEARNED

Ensure the tool is tested (with the sample test provided by Respondus) prior to each exam delivery. This will confirm browser compatibility should an update occur with the students’ computer or with Respondus Lockdown Browser.
