Ungrading: an Introduction

“Ungrading” means raising an eyebrow at grades as a systemic practice, distinct from simply not grading. The word is a present participle, an ongoing process, not a static set of practices.
If your institution just continued grading during the pandemic, business as usual, here’s what all those grades were measuring:
- how well students and teachers pivoted to online
- whether students had necessary access and support at home
- the ability of students to perform in a crisis

From Virtual Spectator to Participant: Engaging Students in Synchronous Online Learning Activities

Keeping students engaged in online courses takes careful consideration. Technology options are available to help create a virtual learning environment that promotes social interaction. Occasionally, engaging students in synchronous online learning activities is one option for facilitating connections and a sense of community between faculty and students. Virtual video conferencing platforms, such as ZOOM, have created unique opportunities for facilitating synchronous online learning activities. However, faculty are often faced with the challenge of students who are hesitant to participate in a synchronous virtual learning environment. Beyond COVID-19: What’s Next for Online Teaching and Learning in Higher Education?

To say that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly interrupted the normal operation of educational institutions worldwide is a huge understatement. According to UNESCO, the educational experiences of nearly 1.4 billion studentsâ€â€of all agesâ€â€were disrupted. In an uncharacteristically swift action for higher education, the COVID-19 pandemic forced colleges and universities to move their courses online while faculty, administrators, and staff worked remotely in order to protect millions of students and themselves. Since then, remote courses, remote student support services, remote graduation ceremonies, and remote campus tours became the new norm, all aimed at controlling the rapid spread of this deadly virus. This one-week micro-course will introduce the theory and practice of hybrid and HyFlex learning. Through asynchronous discussions, with opportunities for synchronous meetings with peers, participants will explore the theory and practice of hybrid and HyFlex learning and develop a plan or resource for use in a hybrid or HyFlex teaching situation.
