The Library and Disability Services collaborated together to create an assistive technology bank for JIBC students. We want to showcase the items we have available for loan and allow attendees to test them out for themselves.

WHY WAS THIS PROJECT NEEDED?

This project was needed to allow our students who are in need of assistive technology to readily gain access. Assistive technology has the ability to enhance the learning experience for students and to remove barriers for students with disabilities.

HOW DOES THIS DEMONSTRATE INNOVATION?

Assistive technology has the ability to aid with studying and information retention, enhance the learning experience for students, and to remove barriers for students with disabilities.

PROBLEMS OR CHALLENGES FACED?

Some assistive technology items are more technological or advanced than others. There can be a longer learning period with certain items.

LESSONS LEARNED

Assistance technology goes beyond disability and has the ability to assist anyone with their learning or daily lives.

About Crystal Yin
Crystal Yin is the Electronic Resources and Systems Librarian at the JIBC Library. She is also the liaison librarian for the School of Health, Community and Social Justice. She is responsible for managing the library’s electronic resources, systems and equipment. She also works closely with other JIBC departments to ensure that students and staff have the necessary educational technology to perform their studying and teaching activities.
About Victoria Ansell
Victoria Ansell is the Disability Services Manager. She creates and helps to implement accommodation agreements while also supporting and advocating for students with disabilities at JIBC in all programs.
