OFFICE OF INDIGENIZATION

Sharpe and Arsenault (2009) state that Aboriginal Peoples will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the economic future of Canada, and, in particular, that of the Western provinces (p. 26). There are 270,585 Indigenous Peoples living in BC, comprising 5.9% of the province’s population and 16% of Canada’s total Indigenous population (BC First Nations Justice Council, 2020, p. 21). In ten years, Indigenous population in BC grew then more than 38%, compared to 9.6% growth of non-Indigenous populations with the average age of Indigenous citizens in BC under 33 (pp. 21-22).

Education is the impetus for developing a workforce. To support Indigenous representation across sectors, educational institutions must be a bridge over the colonial chasm that Indigenous learners are forced to hurdle to find their rightful place in Canada’s labour market. The leadership of educators is paramount to our future Indigenous workforce. Only by educators becoming skillful and adept in Indigenous education, pedagogical methodologies and Indigenization can the highest potential of the future of Canada be realized.

We recommend you check out BCcampus’s Pulling Together Learning Series to enhance disciplinary practice in Indigenous education. As a place-based, provincial resource, developed in partnership with local Indigenous authors and communities, this professional development tool offers relevant teachings as much as it is a glowing example of working with Indigenous Peoples in a good way.
