What is a barrier to learning that you have experienced or are aware of that you’d like to see eliminated?

What is something you’ve done in your work (as an instructor, course developer, administrator, etc.) to improve accessibility in your area?

One obstacle I have seen at my time with the JIBC is that we take for granted computer literacy and access. In our program, each Module has a significant portion of online self-paced work that requires a personal computer, internet connection, as well as a quiet space to work interrupted.

Often, we have older staff join the program who have access but not the experience working with technology, and they struggle through the program. If they cannot keep up or understand how to use the applications, there is little additional support available. As a result, although they have the skills and experience to do the job, they cannot overcome the technological barriers to employment.

I think a focus on providing those basic computer skills, prior to the training, would help with accessibility.

One thing I have tried to do is to provide alternatives for students. For example, I have a paper handout, but also a video that students can watch. I also offer them the option of watching me work through a process or procedure, and then they try or go first, and I provide feedback as they go along.
