Why we shouldn’t go back to “normal”​ in the workplace

Given the recent health order from Dr. Bonnie Henry to stop any unnecessary return to working in person, I’ve been thinking a lot about how BCcampus has handled the shift and about working from home in general. I’ve spent the last two decades in jobs that required computer and internet use, as well as working with people who were not physically located where I was. As an early career instructional designer, I worked with faculty who were teaching online, and thus could and did teach from anywhere. Still, my employers, like so many others, required me to do my job from my desk in an open office setting, and later from a shared office in the basement of a library. When I took over leadership of a unit, I had a 10-month-old and lived a 45-minute drive away from work. As a single-vehicle household, my partner and I hired a sitter who could come early and stay late to accommodate workdays of eight hours and counting, plus travel times. A year or so later, our child was in a family daycare, and the daily commute now included all three of us. As any parents will recall, getting out of the house in the morning was not the ideal way to start our day. Read More

Teaching a great online class requires more than an understanding of pedagogical strategies powered by technology. It requires a cohesive course design that enables all of our students to learn and succeed.
In asynchronous online courses, students navigate organizational structures, class materials, and activities, all without the real-time guidance of their instructor. And Learning Management Systems (LMSs) do little to help. These platforms have great potential to facilitate interaction and learning, but they are not (yet) intuitive environments. Read More

BCcampus invites research proposals from B.C. post-secondary educators and students who are committed to exploring and improving student learning and eager to conduct and share research with others. For this call, only projects with Indigenous lead researchers and/or projects that are equitably and reciprocally partnered with Indigenous peoples and communities will be considered.
Deadline for submissions is Sunday, February 14, 2021. Awards are typically up to $6,000.
