PART 1 – Introduction and Understanding Disabilities

Workshop for Faculty and Staff

This lesson provides an overview of the different types of disability and their impacts. It will offer insight into the lived experiences of individuals with disabilities and some of the challenges they face in the college setting.  Participants will be invited to share their stories working with students with disabilities with the goal of broadening their understanding of the JIBC student learning experience.

At the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Be familiar with the range of disabilities instructors may encounter in their classrooms
  • Understand how disabilities can impact students and their learning
  • Be familiar with disability facts and statistics as applied to the JIBC context
  • Recognize that we can change the environment to improve learning for all students
  • Explore reasons for providing reasonable accommodation for students with disabilities
  • Identify issues that impact whether and to what extent students choose to access accommodations
